Essential packing list

Mount Agung is not a casual hike. You must wear sturdy hiking boots with deep lugs; running shoes are dangerous on the steep, loose scree. Bring a strong headlamp with fresh batteries, as you will hike in the dark for 4 to 6 hours.

Pack warm layers, including a fleece and windbreaker, because the summit wind chill is freezing. Gloves are vital for the rock scrambling sections and to keep your hands warm. Do not forget 2 to 3 liters of water per person and high-energy snacks.

Planning questions

How hard is the hike?

Mount Agung is extremely difficult. The Besakih route involves nearly 1,900 meters of elevation gain and sections of 45-degree scree slopes. It requires a high level of fitness.

Can beginners hike Mount Agung?

No. Mount Agung is recommended only for experienced hikers. Beginners should consider climbing Mount Batur instead.

What happens if it rains?

Do not attempt the hike in heavy rain. The 45-degree slopes become dangerously slippery, and guides will usually cancel the trek for safety.
