This 13-kilometer round-trip trail is the longest and most demanding way up Mount Agung.
The Besakih route takes you to the true summit at 3,031 meters. You will face nearly 1,900 meters of elevation gain during the 6 to 7 hours of ascending.
Treks begin around 11:00 PM to reach the peak before dawn. All foreign hikers must hire a licensed local guide to navigate this strenuous trail.
15 minsBesakih complex
This is the highest temple in the Besakih complex and serves as your official starting point. You will spend about 15 minutes here before the climb. Show respect if entering the temple grounds and follow your guide's instructions.
2 hoursDirt paths & roots
The first third of the ascent cuts through dense, humid forest. You will navigate dirt paths and exposed tree roots in the dark. Pace yourself carefully during these first two hours to save energy for the intense rock scramble later.
1.5 - 2 hours45-degree incline
This is a highly challenging 45-degree incline over loose volcanic rock and ash. It takes up to two hours to push through this steep terrain. Use trekking poles here, as they relieve heavy knee pressure during the slippery descent.
1 hourSunrise views
The absolute peak of Mount Agung provides 360-degree panoramic views of Bali and Mount Rinjani. You will spend an hour resting and watching the sunrise. Put your warm layers on immediately, as temperatures drop to near freezing with wind chill.
